Natural and sustainable single-size solid wood bed frame – Kipli

A solid wood single bed base serves two very different purposes. For a child’s bedroom, it is above all a choice for peace of mind: once dried, solid wood emits nothing—zero VOC emissions—and is finished with water-based varnish or vegetable wax, free of chemicals that evaporate at night. For an adult bedroom, two single bed bases placed side by side allow each sleeper to choose their own mattress —its firmness and support—without having to compromise. In both cases, solid wood offers the same benefits: a sturdy, healthy structure that doesn’t sag over time. At Kipli, these beds are made in France and Europe from certified solid wood, featuring sturdy slats.

The danger in a child's bedroom rarely comes from the wood itself; it comes from the surface treatments. A synthetic varnish or industrial adhesive can release volatile organic compounds (VOCs) for months.

At Kipli, the structures are finished with water-based or vegetable-based wax—two processes that avoid the synthetic solvents responsible for these emissions.

Once solid wood has been dried and treated, it is inert: it no longer emits any substances. This isn’t a marketing claim; it’s a property of the material.

It all depends on how you plan to use it. For children ages 2 to 6, the 70x140 cm bed serves as a natural transition from the crib without taking up the entire room, thanks to the JAVA cabin bed. From age 6 through adolescence, the 90x190 or 90x200 cm size is the standard: it accommodates several years of growth without needing structural changes. For an adult bedroom, the 80x190, 80x200, 120x190, and 120x200 cm sizes offer more width depending on the room’s layout. And for two adults who wish to combine two single bed bases, each with its own mattress, the WOOD bed is available as a duo: 2x70x190, 2x80x190, or 2x80x200 cm. In all cases, the flex slats are calibrated to adapt to the sleeper’s weight and movements.

Traceability begins before the workshop. Kipli selects specific wood species—such as European ash, okoumé, and pine—whose origin is fully documented. The pieces are then crafted in partner workshops in France and across Europe, using expertise that we choose not to outsource. We do not manufacture what we cannot trace—this principle has guided every material choice since 2018.

Solid wood is low-maintenance—that’s one of its best features. A slightly damp cloth is all you need for routine cleaning; avoid harsh detergents that could damage the finish. For water-based varnished surfaces, avoid excessive moisture and solvent-based cleaners. For vegetable wax finishes, applying natural wax once or twice a year is sufficient to nourish the wood and maintain its appearance. In the case of minor scratches, a small amount of wax or linseed oil applied to the area is usually enough to reduce the marks. Solid wood ages well—it doesn’t deteriorate, it develops a patina. It’s a material that gains character over time, not one that wears out.
