140x190 Natural and Sustainable Solid Wood Bed Base – Kipli

The 140x190 is the most common standard size for double beds in France, fitting into the vast majority of bedrooms without any layout constraints. The 190 cm length comfortably accommodates two sleepers up to about 185 cm tall. If one of the two is taller than that, the 140x200 is the better choice . Otherwise, the 140x190 offers exactly the same width in terms of comfort, with a slightly reduced length—a detail that can make all the difference in a standard bedroom. The OTTO upholstered bed base is covered in French linen—woven since 1835 by Lemaitre Demeestere—and features a PEFC-certified poplar frame. It stands on its own without a bed frame and adds a touch of texture to the bedroom. The solid wood bed base, on the other hand, leaves the material exposed: the wood speaks for itself, and the slats are visible. Both meet the same standards at Kipli—zero chemical adhesives, zero synthetic treatments, and handcrafted construction—but they cater to two different sensibilities. One provides a covering, the other provides structure.

Three types of wood, three distinct characters. The solid oak used in the LIVIA bed is the finest and densest, crafted in Haute-Marne less than 100 km from the forest and certified by Bois de France. The solid beech used in the NOVA and AVA beds, crafted in northern France by Mathieu, is more flexible and slightly lighter in color, yet durable, and can be configured with rigid or flexible slats depending on your preferred level of firmness.The okoumé used in the LUCA and LUCA storage beds, crafted in Turin since 1952, is a soft, malleable exotic wood from Central Africa, assembled without screws or glue, with a hand-applied vegetable wax finish. Three wood species, three workshops, the same commitment to natural craftsmanship.

Rigid slats provide firm, even support; they keep the mattress flat, prevent sagging, and promote air circulation. This is the recommended choice for a natural latex mattress. Flexible slats adapt to the body’s movements and provide a more enveloping feel; they are better suited for pocket-spring mattresses or for those who prefer a softer sleeping surface. The NOVA and AVA beech wood beds offer both options. The LUCA and LIVIA beds are equipped with rigid slats. The LUCA storage bed is equipped with flexible slats.

The danger doesn’t come from the wood itself; it comes from what’s applied to it. Synthetic varnishes, industrial adhesives, and particleboard can release volatile organic compounds (VOCs) for several months. At Kipli, every 140x190 bed frame is designed without chemical adhesives, melamine-coated wood, or synthetic treatments. Finishes vary by model: vegetable oil or vegetable wax applied by hand on okoumé beds, natural water-based VOC-free varnish on oak and beech beds, and untreated natural linen on the upholstered bed frame. What the bed doesn’t contain is just as important as what it does.

Care instructions depend on the finish. For the LUCA bed in okoumé: wipe with a damp cloth daily; use Marseille soap or black soap if needed. For the LUCA storage bed: same procedure, using white vinegar and baking soda for stains. For the LIVIA bed in oak: use a slightly damp sponge; wax may be used, but never products containing silicone. For the NOVA and AVA beds in beech: Marseille soap or black soap applied with a clean cloth. For the OTTO upholstered bed base: a damp cloth, or white vinegar and baking soda for stains. In all cases, avoid harsh products. Solid wood doesn’t require much—that’s precisely what makes it a durable material.
