Unlike flexible slats, rigid slats keep the mattress flat and prevent sagging. They also promote airflow under the mattress, reducing moisture buildup during the night.

The slats on the WOOD bed are made of solid okoumé wood, left unfinished, and compatible with all types of mattresses: natural latex or spring. No surprises when you use it: what you see is what you get.

Melamine-coated wood and industrial adhesives can release volatile organic compounds (VOCs) for several months after purchase in a room that is occupied for ten to twelve hours a night—this is a point worth noting. The WOOD bed is made of solid okoumé wood, with no plastic screws, no chemical adhesives, and no engineered wood. It is finished with vegetable wax, applied by hand—a process that emits no synthetic solvents. This is not a brand promise: it is the direct result of what the bed does not contain.

The WOOD bed is made in Italy, near Turin, by Luca, a craftsman whose workshop has been working with solid wood since 1952. Each piece is assembled by hand, without screws or metal parts, using traditional joinery techniques that ensure the structure’s durability over time. The wood used is okoumé, a soft and malleable exotic wood from Central Africa, sourced from sustainably managed forests.

The finishing vegetable oil is applied by hand, piece by piece. It is this level of care that makes every WOOD bed unique—not in a marketing sense, but in the literal sense.

The only difference is in the width: it’s 20 cm narrower. For a child or teenager sleeping alone, those 20 cm don’t affect sleep comfort, but they can make all the difference in a small bedroom. A 70x190 cm bed fits into spaces where a 90x190 cm bed would be too bulky, leaving room for a desk, a bookshelf, or a reading nook. It is often this consideration that guides the choice, more so than the sleeper’s body type. A bed finished with vegetable oil requires little maintenance—that’s one of its best features. On a daily basis, a slightly damp cloth is all you need to clean the frame, without detergents or chemicals that could damage the natural finish. Once or twice a year, applying vegetable oil or natural wax nourishes the wood and preserves its appearance. In the case of a light scratch, a little oil applied to the area is usually enough to reduce the mark. Solid okoumé ages well: it doesn’t deteriorate; it develops a patina.
