What size duvet should you choose for your bed?

What size duvet should you choose for your bed?

    To get a good night’s sleep, it’s essential to have all the elements that make up a comfortable bedding set: the bed, consisting of a box spring and a high-quality mattress; a pillow suited to your sleeping position; and bedding that matches your personal preferences. While some people still prefer to sleep in traditional bedding—consisting of a sheet, or several sheets, and a blanket—the vast majority opt for a duvet, which is more modern and easier to set up and maintain.

    We’re here to guide you and explain the key factors to consider when choosing a duvet in the perfect size, based on your mattress dimensions, your sleeping habits, and the height and build of the person or people who will be using the bed. Our advice will help you make an informed decision and find the right duvet size to turn your bed into a haven of relaxation and rest, whether you choose a duvet made of synthetic materials or natural materials, such as cotton or down.

    What are the most common duvet sizes?

    In France, five duvet sizes are considered standard and are therefore available in stores and online, along with the essential duvet cover that usually comes with the duvets.

    The most common dimensions are as follows:

    • the 140 x 200 cm duvet;
    • the 200 x 200 cm comforter;
    • a duvet measuring 220 x 240 cm;
    • the comforter measuring 240 x 260 cm;
    • the king-size duvet (240 x 280 cm).

    In addition to these standard sizes, there are duvets designed for very specific mattress sizes, but it will then be more difficult to find a duvet cover or bedding set that matches the duvet’s exact dimensions.

    What size should I choose for a single bed?

    Generally speaking, the mattress for a single bed—designed for one person, a child, or a teenager—is 90 cm wide and 190 cm or 200 cm long.

    For this type of bed, we recommend choosing a standard-sized duvet, specifically 140 x 200 cm. This size ensures you’re well covered and provides all the comfort needed for a restful night’s sleep, even if you toss and turn or move around frequently during the night. The width of duvets of this size ensures that the duvet drapes over the sides of the bed to retain heat throughout the night.

    You can also choose a duvet that is slightly wider but the same length—160 x 200 cm—if you prefer it to hang down further on the sides of the bed.

    It’s also worth noting that some single beds and mattresses are wider (120 cm); in that case, you should choose a comforter measuring 160 x 200 cm or 200 x 200 cm.

    A comforter for a standard double bed

    The double bed, with its 140 x 190 cm mattress, is the most common type of bed; sometimes the length is extended to 200 cm to accommodate taller people.

    Unsurprisingly, the 220 x 240 cm duvets are the most commonly recommended. This size allows the duvet to hang slightly over the edges of the bed and provides ample coverage for both people.

    However, if you prefer a comforter that fits the mattress exactly, you can opt for a 200 x 200 cm comforter; the main drawback is that one person may feel uncomfortable or cold if the other person pulls the comforter toward them while sleeping.

    Conversely, if you feel it’s essential to sleep with a comforter that hangs well over the sides of the bed, it’s best to choose a comforter that’s 240 cm wide. As a reminder, the length of a comforter or mattress provides comfort for taller people, while body size determines the choice of bedding and linens.

    What size duvet should I get for a queen-size mattress?

    Behind this Anglicism lies a type of bed and mattress that is poised to replace the traditional double bed, driven by the hospitality industry, which uses larger bed sizes to accommodate the varying heights and body types of its potential guests.

    A queen-size bed is between 160 cm and 180 cm wide and 200 cm long, similar to a standard bed. Because of their width, queen-size beds require a specific duvet size to ensure sleepers remain comfortable.

    Duvets measuring 220 x 240 cm or even 240 x 260 cm are ideal for beds of this size. The 220 x 240 cm duvet is one of the most common sizes, giving you more options when looking for a bedding set or duvet cover.

    Duvets for extra-large beds

    Ever larger and wider, king-size beds are the most imposing option in bedding, with widths ranging from 180 to 200 cm. When choosing a comforter for these very specific bed models, it’s essential to think big and wide.

    You should therefore opt for the largest size available on the market (240 x 280 cm) or contact a duvet manufacturer that offers custom-made products, keeping in mind that you’ll then need to find a duvet cover that fits these unusual dimensions.

    In fact, it is recommended that you choose a duvet cover that is the same size as the duvet, just as you would for a pillowcase. There is no point in buying a cover that is larger than your duvet; this applies to all types and sizes of duvets. Furthermore, you shouldn’t choose a duvet cover smaller than the duvet, assuming the duvet will shrink after the first wash.

    A duvet cover that is slightly too small will be harder to put on and will create wrinkles, making it difficult to achieve a smooth, even, and comfortable bed for a good night’s sleep—which should remain a priority when choosing a mattress, box spring, pillow, and, of course, a duvet and its cover.
